Question:

I need tips on how to have a successful road trip with two cats!?

I currently live in california, but due to my husband being in the military, i will be driving to michigan in about a month. Of course, we are bringing our two cats. The trip will take about four days, hopefully, but i wonder what is the best, most safe, way to accommodate my cats during the driving. We have a small car, a ford contour, so I can't put any seats down or anything to place a litter box. How often should we stop to feed and water them? When we do stop, should we harness them and let them outside, or would that be too stressful? Should we have two seperate crates, one for each, or one large crate for them. One is a kitten, about four months old, and the other is two years old, so the kitten likes to play and cause trouble with the older, and i am afraid of added stress to the older cat due to forced close contact, but i also don't want them to be too cramped in a small carrier. Any advice will be helpful, as we want to make this trip as stress-free as we possibly can for them.

Thank you!

  1. Can they be transported when you settle in Michigan? Can anybody help you with this? I do not like that they have to travel for four days.

If you must, invest in leash for cats. They don't like it but it will save them from running away from you. Separate crates will be a good idea.

  2. they're right you should separate them and stay in a hotel where pets are accepted.   Good luck †james†

  3. I'd keep them seperate in the car a well.

I think a large carrier for the older one with a small litter pan in there maybe helpful. Maybe move the kitten itno it after a couple hours so it can use the litterpan as well.

Make sure to cover the carriers. Cats hadnle car rides better if they can't see anything.

And make sure you're making resvations at the hotels you're staying at. Some don' allow pets, those that do may only allow one, or they may ask for a very large deposit.

The kitten maybe okay to go out on a leash, but the older one may be too scared since it doesn't know the area that wlel. I find kittens adjust to change a lot better than older cats.

  4. since the kitten is very playful, I would seperate them for the car trip and yes, harness them when you stop for let them use the RR etc. They may escape otherwise. You might talk to your vet about some meds to give them to make them more comfortable on the long trip. Also make sure that where ever you are staying at night (hotel) accepts your pets this way once your in for the night, you can let them out and about in the room so they can get some much needed stretching. Be careful and safe on your trip
