1. I have a rat that likes to bite. What I do is take her out and handle her everyday. If she bites or tries to bite me I give her a gentle tap on the head. Not to hard you don't want to give the little thing a concussion! If he/she does not try to bite you again praise him/her and give them a treat for being friendly and nice. It also can depend on their past, I got a big white female rat named Cheddar. The people that had her before me would through her, squeeze her to hard and handle her roughly. She bit me all the time!!!!! I finally got to where she would only bite if she was scared or nervous. I hope this helps you.

  2. just handle him every day. thats kinda like my guinea pig, except she squirmed not bite. and i held her alot and now she perfect! good luck!

  3. What I've done when my rats have bitten me, is EEEEP! very loudly. This shows them they're hurting me. You need to let your rat know you're not threatening. I agree about wearing thick gloves at first. You need to take your rat out A LOT. Get him very used to being handled, and he'll stop being afraid. Since it's very likely the rat's biting is fear-based, if your friend didn't handle him much.

  4. sorry but ARGH i hate rodents - i have a massive phobia of mice- i havent come across rats so far and THANK GOD!

  5. First of all, get another male rat for him to play with. Rats do much better in pairs. The biting may be because he has been kept alone. They can get mean from that, although rats usually do not bite.

When you get a new rat, put the new rat through quarantine.

    Read this: http://ratguide.com/health/basics/quaran...

And it will tell you what to do.

Now, once you have that taken care of, there are some things you can do to try and gain his trust. Put your hand in his cage and let him get used to it. Put a sock on your hand if you are scared he will bite. Try hand feeding him treats, and gently stroking him. Just work with him daily. Here is a site that has info on trust training: http://www.ratfanclub.org/trust.html

    Good luck!

  6. He's probably just shy. As soon as he learns to love you, he'll stop.

Try wearing gloves while handling him so that if he bites you, you won't jump and it shouldn't hurt. This will get him to calm down and get used to being handled. Handling him is the best way to get him to stop.

I've heard that tapping them on the nose is good, but don't tap them too hard or else you could seriously injure him.

I've trained my chinchilla to stop biting and chewing on things it isn't supposed to (wood work, clothing, etc) by snapping my fingers. He'll stop and groan, but then gets over it and goes about doing his own thing. ^^

  7. I'd try bitter apple spray. It's specifically for biting pets. They don't like the taste of it, so they stop biting.

  8. I think he is showing signs of aggressive behavior. He may be a bit afraid from you, if you have only got him recently. To stop him biting you, you will need to tame it everyday (handle and play with) and then he will begin to trust you.

I found this website interesting. Please visit it:

It is very rare that a rat is born nasty and NEVER breed aggressive rat as it will pass on to the offspring.
