Question:

I need to bathe my long haired dog...?

My "new" family member is a dog! At age 54 this is a first for this "kitty girl"! He is 3/4 border collie and 1/4 rottie and in need of a bath. I've taken him swimming a couple of times in the lake, so with that and regular brushing, I know that his coat is nappy close to his skin, then straight and long...and now he is really sheding and stinky! It is time for a bath and I would like to get as much of the sheding hair off as I can during the big bath! Any advice? Thank You!

  1. i take my pap to the groomers as i can't hold on to wash.

watching them, they usually brush out first.  so that the water doesn't tighten mats.  and sounds as if you have a double coat.  so it needs combing with the brushing every day.  a furminator is great for shedding out these dogs.  they also blow dry with this bred that gets a lot of the hair out.

  2. To make things easier for your "first time" take him to a groomer and ask to watch so you can see how they do it. Most groomers will sell you shampoos and such. Bathing dogs are fun! have lots of towels on hand, keep the inside of their ears dry and be prepared to have a bath yourself!!

  3. I've had shelties, somewhat similar to border collies.  Get some shampoo, rinse, and a couple of good brushes.  It is much easier if you brush him first before you give him a bath, then brush and blow dry him after wards.  Piece of cake.

  4. If you really want to do a thorough job and get as much loose hair out as possible you could always go somewhere that has a hydrobath and blowdry facility. A local groomer may offer a diy hydrobath service, some animal shelters also have a facility, even some car washes do!

The hydrobath will help get your dog extra clean and the blow dry will not only dry your dog really quickly, but it helps to blow all the loose hairs away!

there are different types of shampoos for different types of dog- depending on his coat condition- you should consult your local dog store, vet, etc for their advice on products.
