Next year the gym assesment at my school is to run a mile in 12 minutes. My gym teacher says that is easy and most people can do that walking. (you have to understand i know nothing about this at all.)

So... i got on my treadmill today to see if you could do it. I ended up running for 10 minutes at 4 mph and my distance was "0.57" before i decided to stop.

Im not in horrible shape. I am a dancer so I am in shape, its just that im not good at the whole "cardio vascular" c**p.

Does that mean i did only a half mile? Im confused. Can someone explain?

  1. the treadmill is really diferent from the real thing....b/c u have to remember that the treadmll controls your speed, so you can't go faster at your will w/o adjusting the buttons....go to

type in your address and create a random route around your block and see how much makes a mile, then go outside and run on that route, and time yourself....trust me your gym teacher is right - you can DEFINITELY walk it! i  mean i can barely run up the streeet, but b/c of the motivation of failing the class if i dont pass, i ran the mile in 9 minutes (which agreed is pretty bad) but i still passed!

an average time is about 7-8 minutes, but if ur like me, and get over that, u can improve

    good luck :)

even if u walk it, you'll pass

  2. if your going 4mph thats 15 minutes miles and you should have been at the half mile in 7:30 and so .57 should take you 8:33 going 4mph so idk how you only got that far in 10 minutes . a 12 minute mile is 5mph on your treadmill, but its soo much easier to go running outside. I wouldnt really worry about this gym test, its gym its ment to be an easy A you could really just run at a half way decent pace for 2 laps and walk fast for the rest of it.

  3. you shouldn't have any problem. 4 laps around a regular track is a mile.  but to answer your question if you are on a treadmill going 4 mph it would take you 15 min to run a mile

  4. dont worry about it..youll be fine

  5. Not much to add, people have pretty much covered it.  .57 miles is just over a half mile, and 4 mph is 15 min/mile.  4 laps on track is a mile.  Your gym teacher exaggerated a little about walking a mile in 12 minutes.  It is possible, but you really have to haul it.  15 to 20 is a lot more like it, and even 15 is pretty fast.  But it shouldn't take you more than a week to work up to 12 min, especially if you are a dancer.  You will be fine.

  6. well that happens to me when i run on my treadmill it takes me like 20 minutes to run a mile.  but if u can visit a track and see how many laps equal a mile. or run in a park or in  your neighborhood and time yourself.  you can always get in a car and drive around so the mile marker goes up one. but you should be fine

  7. I would go to the track and run a mile to see where you stand in the mile

  8. Yes, on the treadmill, .57 means you ran just a little over half of a mile. But don't worry, you can reach your goal!

If you can't yet run a whole mile, start out doing a complete mile of walk/running. Run for 2 minutes... walk for a minute, you get the idea. I reccomend doing this outside, it's a lot prettier! Soon you will work up to running the whole thing.

If you CAN run a mile, just not in under 12 minutes, I'd say set up a mile course in your neighborhood, and every other day, run the course- but only for 12 minutes. Take note of how far you got. You can enjoy the journey to your goal because every couple runs you will get closer and closer to that mile marker.

    Good luck!!
