I'm only going to be there for one night, so I just want to find a place that is inexpensive and in a good location (near the train station). Also are there bad (unsafe) areas in Rome that I should avoid?

If you know of any specific hotels that would be great. Thanks a lot.

  1. My daughter and I went to Rome in March-April '07 to celebrate her 18th birthday. We reserved a room at the Hotel Italia upon recommendations from the TravelAdvisor.com website. We had a wonderful hotel experience and as you can see from the link below, it is really close to the Termini yet a few blocks away so that the noisy main streets dont keep you from sleeping. The staff speaks english and were very friendly, even providing street maps and excellent suggestions for several nice restaurants in the area.

In my own opinion, I would honestly say we had an absolutely wonderful experience in Rome, even when we had our $350 digi-cam pickpocketed, on the street, right outside the McDonalds thats in the same - Plaza Republica - area as the Termini. We didnt let it bother us, went straight to a photo shop on the same street (Via Nationale), purchased another digi-cam and continued on our journey.

My daughter and I travelled alone, and even at 2-3am we found ourselves walking the streets without a care in the world...felt very safe the entire time we were there...even after the pickpocketing, S**T happens..ya know

The basic warning I would give anyone...be aware of PICKPOCKETS....hold your cams in your hand, or at the least keep that lil strap thingie wrapped around your wrist, NEVER wear your wallet in your back pocket....and ESPECIALLY be aware when you become surrounded in a group of people...many people think because theres more people around you that you are safer against pickpockets...in fact, thats the best time for them to strike...we personally witnessed a man pulling his roller-suitcase behind him, being picketed while he walked down the street towards the Termini, in a group of about 7 people....

Dont let it worry you tho....tho it suxx royally when you lose something like so...its just material items, can always be replaced.....ENJOY ROME !!!

  2. Rome is full of people who are looking to take advantage of tourists, so be careful.. I was there three years ago and it was bad and I am told it has gotten much worse.

I will be leaving the end of this month to go again, I am also staying for one night before I get on a ship. We are staying at the holiday Inn, I got a great rate They offer transport Downtown, and within 8 miles.  I was there last time in Oct, it was a great time of year.  I am not sure what you are going there for, but I will look up a site I found very helpful and true, written by a person in Rome, on how to stay safe.

Have a great time, I know I will.
