  1. If you need to ask, you shouldn't do it yourself. However, I'm also a fan of self sufficiency, so I suggest you go to a bike shop and get assistance on chain selection. Pick up a repair book, chain break, and some tri-flow. Learn and you will be better for it

  2. Take the bike to a bike expert and ask them to write down the type of chain you have and then ask for that type of chain at any bike shop.

  3. If you don't know what type of chain you need, you'll probably not know how to "cut" the chain to the correct length and install it.  In that case, spend a few extra dollars and have the bike shop change it for you.

  4. If it is a gear bike just count the cogs at the back and go into the shop and buy a chain for a 6-7-8-9 or 10 speed.  But, as stated, you will still have to fit it and you will need a chain breaker, a joining link and the knowledge for cutting the chain to the correct length.  One other thing, you usually need to buy a new set of cogs as the new chain will jump if the cogs are worn.
