So, I haven't had a bike since I was a kid, but I'd like to get back into it. I am only 5'2", so is there a specific size bike to buy? Do they even make bicycles in sizes? Any help is appreciated.

  1. yes bike very by height for ex i am 6foot 3inches so i got a 60cc so if you are 5foot 2 inches you nees a 54cc bike go to a bike shop and tell them you need a 54cc bike and they will hook you up man

  2. I recomend a 13" or 15" bike off the web.  Try http://www.performancebike.com  They have great prices.

  3. You can choose  bicycles 26-inch and 24 - inch many for you

    The Right Ride

In general, bikes are broken down into three major categories:

Road and Racing Bikes--As a general rule, road and racing are built for speed and longer distances on paved surfaces. Thinner tires, lightweight 29-inch (700c) wheels, and drop bars that allow for a more aerodynamic position are the norm. Most road bikes, regardless of price, offer many gears for tackling both hilly and flat terrain.

Mountain Bikes--With their larger tires, hill-friendly gearing, and upright position, mountain bikes are very popular for all types of riding, both on pavement and off. Mountain bikes that are designed specifically for rugged trail use typically feature a suspension fork. Some may have rear suspension, as well. A quick change of the tires on any mountain bike--even one that you use regularly on trails--adds to its versatility and makes it a worthy street machine.

Comfort/Cruiser Bikes--For tooling around on bike paths, light trails, or for cruising a quiet beach-side lane, comfort/cruiser bikes are the ticket. With a super-relaxed riding position, padded seats, and limited or no gearing, these bikes are made for enjoying the scenery and having fun with the family.

    The Right Size

Fit is crucial for comfort, control, and proper power and endurance on a bike. Here are some basic bike fit tips:

Stand-over Height--To find out if a bike's overall height fits your body, measure your inseam. Next, determine how much clearance you'll need between your crotch and the top tube of the bike. For a mountain bike, you'll want three to five inches of clearance. A road bike should offer between one and two inches of clearance, while a commuter bike should have two to four inches. Compare the stand-over height for a given bike to your measurements (inseam + clearance) to determine the right bike height.

  4. Dayafterday had  some very good info.

let me add just a few things to that:

the big box stores do not sell much in fitted bikes for folks outside the "Average" size.

Start your search at a bike shop to see what a well fitting bike feels like.

Be sure to discuss what you will be using the bike for-- fun rides, commuting, errands, road, bike paths.

While you are there check out a "feet forward " design, like a Giant Suede or a Electra Townie.

Then add a 24" wheeled bike at a big box or sporting good store to your  research.

If you have an REI close, they are a good value.

Gears are important for hill  climbing, so be sure to try out a decent hill before  buying.  Yes your strength and skill  will improve as you get "time in the saddle", but make sure that you and that bike can make the hills.

A bike shop will  take care of those little silly questions that could  spoil your  enjoyment-- how to shift better, maybe choosing a more comfy saddle, selecting a different tire, teaching basic bike checks before riding.

And  check out your local bike club.

    Good luck
