My cars engine isn't getting fuel... and I need to get a pump..

(although I suspect it may just be tank sludge)

So, in order to save cash.. Im buying the part and then bringing it to the mechanic.

What exactly is the difference between a plastic/steel tank fuel pump?

and is it worth the price difference?

Fuel pump with steel tank : $189.99

Fuel pump with plastic tank: $264.49

  1. Just a thought.  They say that the fuel containing ethanol can be harmful to steel and rubber.  Maybe it doesn't affect the plastic tank as much.   Most reputable mechanics will charge only a little extra than wholesale price, so personally I would leave it to your mechanic.  Even with his little add on, it could be cheaper than you could buy it.  No use asking your mechanic, he will only give you his opinion, and every mechanic will probably have a different opinion.  Good luck.

  2. Actually buying the part and then asking your mechanic to put it in for you is a little like buying food and then asking the restaurant to cook it up for you.

Add to that the fact that he can't and won't warranty any part you bring in.

You either trust your mechanic to do the best for you at a fair price, or you don't.  If you don't, find one you do trust.
