I checked out 2 cordless handset phones on panasonic and uniden.

Are they connected to their bases by a wire or some other way?

I'm confused about 5.8 GHz and 2.4 GHz. What do they mean?

  1. They are both cordless phones -- they just operate on different frequencies is all.

Both phones will plug in like all other phones. The handset, the part you talk into, is the part thats cordless or without any electrical lines. The base does all the transmitting and is what you will plug into the wall jack.

The 2.4 ghz is an old frequency for cordless phones that often got interference from microwaves and wireless networks.

The 5.8 ghz frequency is suppose to fix interference problems. It is a new frequency for cordless phones.

The 5.8 ghz frequency is a higher frequency. Higher frequencies typically give you better range or so they say.
