I need to buy an eco-friendly car, what are some of the best used models?

I have a 98 Dodge Dakota pickup, V6, stick. It's a d**n good truck but it only gets 20mpg. I'll be relocating to Chicago soon and I need something that costs less to run, MUCH less and easier to parallel park. I totally suck at parallel parking.

I would like something that's no more than 3-5yrs old, dual-fuel, preferably gas-electric and low maintenance. Also I'd like a make/model with folding rear seats and a rear door, instead of a trunk for more payload.

I've heard Mini Cooper's are some of the best compact cars for holding their value, being economical and low maintenance. However I'm open to suggestions; Hyundai, Honda, Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Mitsubishi, Toyota…

  1. Get a diesel car

  2. I have a Diesel and I live in Chicago.  They are great.  Other options are getting a bike and taking public transportation.

  3. wvo,or biodiesel.

  4. Chevy has a hybrid Tahoe that's getting great reviews.

  5. The only thing about Mini's is that they are expensive for their size and I believe they require premo gasoline.  Gas is 4 bucks a gallon in Chi-Town.  I had an Accord for 9 years and sold it to a relative and it's still running strong after 270,000+ miles.  The Accords and Civics routinely make Car & Driver's Top 10 best cars in America. So do the Camry and Corrola.  You have to be careful with those hybrids because if you get in a wreck they are more likely to catch on fire.  Check out Kia as well.

  6. Although I'm sure car manufacturers would love to pronounce their cars Eco-friendly, I'm afraid the best way to find an Eco-friendly car would be to live in a city centre, sell the car, and use public transport. It's much more energy efficient for people to live in densely populated areas, where they can walk to nearby shops and go to work on public transport. Also there is the added advantage of a much wider range of services being available, such as specialist hospitals, schools etc.

    Here's another interesting reading

Minivans cost less than SUVs, cost less to operate, and are more convenient for family duty than trucks. Many are quite luxurious and are often more comfortable and more enjoyable to drive than their SUV. The Sienna and Honda Odyssey are superb vehicles and we have high hopes for the 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country (about 18/25 mpg with the powerful 3.8-liter V6). They get much better mileage than the truck-based Sequoia, Ford Expedition, Chevy Tahoe, Dodge Durango, or Nissan Armada, and some are available with all-wheel drive.

Many drivers don't want to be seen in minivans, however, so the sport-utility market is moving away from truck-based SUVs to so-called crossover utility vehicles that blur the line between car and truck.

People are trading in their midsize SUVs for the new crossovers in droves. Indeed, switching from a Ford Explorer to a Ford Edge can save $600 a year in gasoline, according to our calculations. Swapping a Chevy TrailBlazer for a Chevy Equinox or a Dodge Durango to a Chrysler Pacifica or a Toyota 4Runner to a Highlander can yield similar results

  7. How about the World's Cleanest Car that runs on compressed air.

"BBC News is reporting that a French company has developed a pollution-free car which runs on compressed air. India's Tata Motors has the car under production and it may be on sale in Europe and India by the end of the year.

The air car, also known as the Mini-CAT or City Cat, can be refueled in minutes from an air compressor at specially equipped gas stations and can go 200 km on a 1.5 euro fill-up -- roughly 125 miles for $3. The top speed will be almost 70 mph and the cost of the vehicle as low as $7000.

The car features a fibreglass body and a revolutionary electrical system and is completely computer-controlled. It is powered by the expansion of compressed air, using no combustion at all, and the exhaust is entirely clean and cool enough for use in the internal air conditioning system."
