At decent or bargain prices would be great! I am not farmiliar with the city and will only be there for a couple days. I need to find someplace that has a large selection of lycra (but not expensive), some cotton, and other fabrics too. Thanks for any help!

  1. First place to try is Dressew on Hastings St near Homer, they have just about everything, and I mean everything, for sewing. Don't plan on getting out of there in a hurry because you'll want to browse a bit.Their prices are pretty good, and they have a bargain section in the basement. Bring cash, they only accept cash and cheques, no cards. Go there early in the day to avoid parking problems and bring coins for the meters. You might also try Textile Clearance House, Fraser St just north of 41st. You never know what they'll have but prices are excellent. While you're in that neighbourhood, have a quick look into Rokko at 6201 Fraser--small store, good selection of fabulous fabrics. Along Main St in the 6-7000 block you will also find a few more Indian fabric stores, worth a look if you have time. There's a store called Outdoor Innovations at 3293 Main which sells--guess what? outdoor fabrics and they may have lycra, I can't remember. If you want plain unpatterned cottons in quantity, there's Vancouver Textiles(open weekdays only) in Richmond just over the Knight St bridge, they're a wholesaler but do cash sales and if the dad is still there he's a delightful man, as is Jaz at Rokko. I used to buy fabric at work and unless I was looking for very high end fabrics, I used to consider that if I couldn't find it between Dressew, Rokko, Textile Clearance and Vancouver Textile, I wasn't going to find it.

Every store but Van Textiles will be open Saturday for sure, probably not Sunday.

Oh, and to help you negotiate Vancouver, if you are on a north-south street like Fraser or Main, and you are looking for an address of 5500, subtract 15 from the address number and that will give you the number of the cross street, so that 5500 will be at 40th and Fraser.
