I need to change old cleats for new ones, but i can't get them out, what can i do?

i have a good pair of shoes that i've had for years, i need to change the cleats on them, i can't use an allen key becouse they are to worn, what can i do?

  1. Use a dremel tool (or other rotary style tool) to cut slots in the bolts. Than use a large flat bladed s***w driver to turn them out.

    If that doesnt work or you have no dremel tool - use a drill bit slightly larger than 5 - 6 mm. Drilling straight into the area where the hex wrench goes will allow the top of the bolt to "come off" - once through both bolts..the cleat will come off - and you can remove the studs with pliers.

    Ride hard!


  2. Brian has hit on the two best methods of getting a bolt off.  I prefer the Dremel tool method personally.

    Whichever way you go it will be helpful if you apply penetrating oil like "Liquid Wrench" to the screws now.  This will help insure they are free and ready to turn.

    Without belaboring the obvious, I suggest you change your cleats a bit more often.  If the bolts are worn to the point you can't fit a hex key in the slot, the cleats must have been pretty well worn, as well.
