I need to clean a stanless steel 4 pronged stool. Seems like rust mostly. Some comes off as grime.?

Lime juice and salt will get rid of rust. The lime juice gives the acid and salt the abrasiveness needed.

Eagle One makes a product called Nev'r Dull and that stuff works great on most metals, especially stainless steel.  You can get it at Wal-Mart or any automotive store.

You could try cleaning it with a metal polish, which is gentle and would not scratch. If you are in australia, try brasso or silvo metal polishes.

I also seem to remember that using a dry steelo pad impregnated with soap is a trick which might do the trick too. If you have rust it is sometimes best to avoid using a wet solution as it can make the rust worse later on.

Very fine steel wool should get it off but might scratch the surface could also try something like a cream cleanser like jif or something may work a treat.

Might just be real dirty is rare for stainless to rust...

Try a paste made of baking soda and water first.  See how much, if any,  that removes.  It should get rid of the grime at least.

This will work for the rust spots (and restore it somewhat,) but requires a little time and attention. Using a fine sandpaper, lightly sand the rust area(s).  Wipe it clean, and apply touch-up paint if needed in a few thin layers. Let it dry before applying the next application.

If you're not a DIY'er or hate places like Home depot, you may need to look for other responses. :(

I have had rust on stainless steel and is hard to get off . Lots of elbow grease and soap filled steel wool and lots of rinsing off. Will probably have fine scratches but better than brown patches so good luck and start scrubbing perhaps attach to  a drill or use a metal polishing wheel on a grinder.

I have got it off shower rail with green Scotchbrite pad.

Rub with a solution of phosphoric acid. It will reduce Fe3+ (rust) to Fe 2+ (metal iron). Rinse with fresh water, dry with ethanol solution.

Then polish with fine steel wool or graphite.
