  1. well first its 208 not 220,

    3 prong= 3 wires, two hots and a ground,

    4 prong= 4 wires, two hots, a neutral, and a ground,

you need to run new wire, or not hook up the ground and pray you never get a short, don't recommend doing it

  2. What is the appliance?  If it's a range, replace the cord on the range. The new codes require a 4 pin outlet but many older units have a 3 pin plug. This is a code change just a few years ago. The best way is to change the cord.

  3. Here's an article on how to wire a new range cord to your range.  You will need to buy a new 4 prong cord and install it on your range.  http://www.hammerzone.com/archives/elect...

  4. know what you are doing. you can just plug it in, unless it has a different amp rating, then you will need to get a plug that has the right amp rating and change the plug, If you do a lot of this you can make a adapter jumper, and use it to go from the 220 to the 110/220. but check your voltages so you do not kill your self or burn out some thing, when wiring a 3 wire 220 to a 4 prong 10/220, you do not have to use the 4 prong, with a 220 circuit.
