I need to cover up an ugly bunkbed without overwhelming a small bedroom?

My husband is attatched to his childhood bunkbed (it belonged to his dad and uncle as children). Now my boys use it but hubby won't let me deface it in any way. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Canopy  if the kids aren't scared. PLywood paint it put it where the head and feet (as in a wall ) then you can add shelving or hooks for hanging things
