Question:

I need to decrease calcium intake...SOY?

I am trying to decrease my calcium intake. With this being said, I drink about a gallon of milk a day, I am looking into soy. Does anybody know of a soy brand that is not fortified with calcium? Or at least one that contains much (much) less calcium than standard 2% cow milk? What do you think of silk? How does its calcium compare to "regular" milk's? It seems as if they are the same...? HELP!! Thank you.

  1. Yeah, does sound as if you are getting a bit too much animal based calcium.

However, soy (and most beans) are naturally high in calcium even without fortification. Though as a plant based calcium it's easier on your body (less likely to contribute to kidney/gall stones for instance and in fact high plant sources inhibit stones):

You can however get soy milks (and other milks such as almond, hazelnut, oat, rice, hemp, coconut, etc.) that aren't fortified with the other vitamins such as B12 and extra calcium (I think these are better as I'd rather take the extra cost and apply part to a supplement of my choice).

There are a lot of brands out there with my favorite shelf stable ones being Eden Soy and Pacific. However, Organic Valley is amazing. They all taste different. I not only don't care for Silk's taste but I really dislike Dean Foods which owns Silk.

Homemade can be the most tasty. I had some freshly made hemp milk once that about knocked my socks off.

According to this article both Pacific and Edensoy are lower than other brands and so are the almond and rice milks.

I can't get to Organic Valley's website (seems to be down but their soy milk seems to be high too):

If this is about what you drink to soothe your thirst then you might also force yourself to add a glass of water each day until you are drinking 5 or 6. Do whatever it takes. For me I needed it to be icy cold (now that I have the habit it's not as important). Maybe you'd like it better with a squeeze of lemon or lime.

  2. The safest way to decrease your calcium intake is to decrease your milk intake. Basically all soy milks are fortified with calcium, i've yet to see a brand that doesn't. Same for cows. Too much protein or not enough vitamin D can hinder calcium absorption but you really don't want to s***w around with your body. Just drink less milk. Have it one day and then skip it the next.

I can't be sure but other kinds of milks such as almond, rice, oat may not be fortified with calcium, just go to the supermarket or nearest health food shop to check it out.

That being said, why do you want to lower? If your a teen it has been proven this particular age group need more than recommended calcium intake to prevent osteoporosis in later life. Just don;t overdo it.

    Hope i helped. =]
