the district already petition a Truancy Law on the parents. We were in the process of filing OSPI and OCR complaints on the district. During the 3 month he was at school, he lost his ability to stand and walk. Because he require care in all areas, so we kept him home. After 4 months at home, he regained strength and was able to stand up for some of his transfers and walk on his own in his customize walker.

  1. Join HSLDA. It is only a bit over a hundred dollars. You will have a lawyer who will protect you from the school. Do it today, before you worry about books. This is more important. They have a special ed counselor who can help you create an IEP for homestudy. She will help you choose books to read to him and even possibly suggest some physical education to help use what muscles are usable. It is the best hundred dollars you could spend.

For now, read to him. Read Magic School Bus- that's science and Reading. Read historical stories. Just read to him. Remember that even if his movement is affected, he may have learning capacity.

Please join hslda for your own family safety from the truancy officials.

  2. If he is your son, why is the district petitioning the parents, not you?

What sort of school are they insisting on for an IQ below 10?

At any rate, you need to contact a support group in your area and find out the specific regulations regarding special needs children. If you are the parent, you have the right to decide how to raise your son. You obviously have an unusual situation, so you may have to fight for your rights.

Best of luck to you :D

  3. Oh, sorry to hear that.. congratulations on being so proactive.

Considering his extreme mental disability bordering on nonfunctioning, I would suggest getting him a personal attendant and do what you can to teach him to interact with people... Don't try to teach him anything above his capability, as it will only frustrate him. If the gov't is getting on your case, have them speak with his physicians, get documentation stating that he is mentally non-functional

  4. I'm so sorry to hear that about your son. That is just heartbreaking.

Think about his carefully. Could possible getting a parent advocate help. Maybe another more qualified school, where your son could be with others like him for a few hours a day. You'll get a min break and be a better parent for it.

If you are unhappy with your school, I think you have the right to have him transferred elsewhere. Schools are supposed to have specialists with that sort of thing.

Good luck to you and God Bless you and your son.

    I'll think of you often.

  5. In the interest of full disclosure, HSLDA is a conservative and religious organization which has alienated many homeschooling families, including some conservative theists.

  6. You need to check with the laws on homeschooling where you live. Just do a search for your state's name and homeschooling laws and you'll find out more about what to do.
