I have 2 rock that are hollow and have something inside of them that sounds like a rattle. Both of these rock are egg shaped and have some sort of what looks like old scrimshaw marking on them. These rock eggs are about 3 inches long and about 2 inches diameter. I have had these eggs for about 5 or so years and have not found anything to tell me what they are. I have pictures of them if you would like to see them. They are cream white in color with black scrimshaw. Sure would like to know something about them. Thanks for any help.

  1. See this:

or if it is really strange:

  2. At first, when you said the rocks were hollow with something inside them, I thought you were referring to a geode (a hollow rock with a gemstone inside), or some type of fossil. Without the pictures, I wouldn't be able to tell you (and I love anthropology!!).

This site might be able to give you the information you need: http://www.boonetrading.com/index.html

Or, you can contact them this way:

    Boone Trading Company, Inc.

    PO Box 669--562 Coyote Rd.

    Brinnon, Washington 98320

(hours Mon-Fri, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Pacific Time. Or, you could fax them the pictures 24 hours at 1-360-796-4511. )

    As it says:

"Please call our toll-free number 1-800-423-1945. Calling us will get the quickest response, but if you don't mind a delayed response, you can email us at: bella@boonetrading.com. If you do email, please include your daytime phone number if we can call you back, and you'll probably hear from us sooner."

They have things for sale with scrimshaw designs, etc. , so figured this would be your best bet. Good luck.

  3. Put them in the oven, and see if they hatch!

  4. Sounds like a geode or a concretion.  These are hollow rocks, often very round and due to the fact that they are hollow, often have some parts inside that are loose.  The only way to find out, unless you want ot xray it, is to break it.
