I teach children excluded from school and many have very poor reading skills. I'm looking for a phonics program that is going to interest them without being too condescending.

  1. I can recommend two publications, both of which I have used with great success when doing private reading recovery work with primary-aged children who are "failing" at reading.

    1. A children's workbook.

It is called "Toe-by-Toe." The book is expensive at about    Ã‚£20.00, and you need one per child, but worth every penny.

Look at their website. It gives all the info that you need.  They are based at 8, Green Road, Baildon, Shipley. BD17 5HL. I have used this with all my students and every one has shown excellent progress.

    2. A Teachers' Reference Book.

It is called  "Alpha to Omega" by Beve Hornsby, Frula Shear and Julie Pool. This sets out the 44 basic phonic "sounds" in the order in which to present them and gives plenty of examples to incorporate into work sheets. It is available from Amazon.

  2. try rigby star , i think they do sets of books for loder children but cant remeber exactly what they are called (could be rigby rockets) mainly used for primary but they have lots of books that range from reception through to year 6 and i'm sure they went higher but as we only went up to yr 6 never needed them, hope this helps they are great have teachers book so you have all the question ready to answer and follow up worksheets.

  3. Maybe you are looking for soething like Jolly Phonics? Try a google search for it, you might find that helpful.

  4. SRA corrective reading
