is it bad if a car has around 100,000 miles? i really don't have a clue about cars but i am going to get my license in october. i have found a lot of really cute cars that look brand new but they have a lot of miles, ranging from 80,000-100,000. is that really bad? would i have problems with the car if i bought a car with such high mileage?

  1. likely more maintenance with a car that was 100 000miles. if you don't drive a whole lot it wouldn't be a huge deal but if you commute or drive a fair bit....like 30 miles a day or more to school /work you'll encounter more issues.

look at a off lease VW jetta or rabbit, honda civic.

if you don't drive a lot the suv market is in the toilet right now so you can get a jeep wrangler or ford explorer for pretty cheap.

pays to look around and decide on what you want and need and go from there.

    ask yourself:

do I need 4 wheel drive?

    automatic or standard transmission?

is there a dealership nearby to get the vehicle serviced and parts?

also get a copy of consumer reports car guide and it'll help you a bunch.

  2. these days that's low mileage cars today go over 200000 so there not bad just make sure you have it checked over and have someone look for abuse if its abused it could be on its last leg you don't want someone else-es lemon

PS take it to a mechanic you trust

  3. try to find one that has UNDER 70,000 miles over that is really bad. for old cars i recommend Toyota

  4. i say buy a honda civic, they run for like 300,000 miles, and they are "cute".

  5. It is not necessary bad - especially for Japanese car. Honda and Toyota are famous by its reliable even with 100+ miles on it.

At 100k+, it certainly starts to see problems. They could be troublesome, but you start to learn more about car. I will say look for something around 7k to 8k if your budget is 10k, and save the other 2k just in case.

Here are something to keep in mind when you shop:

    - Timing belt, water pump, tune up - These are commonly every 60k or 90~100k maintainence that may cost you about $600-1k. (If the seller haven't done so.)

    - Tires - every 50k to 60k miles. (cheap for small cheap cars, expensive for large size tire.)

    - small parts as battery, starter, injector, alternator etc. There is really no guanetee how good they can be even the car maintance prefectly. They can break before 100k, but you are more likely to have problems when the car getting older.

    - Transmission - even you don't abuse it, and maintance correctly. It is a normal behavior a Transmission breaks with over 100k miles. It is one of the most expensive thing to replace. Well... it won't break even with 200k miles if you are luck.

Well... you need a little bit luck, but they certainly worth of the price in most case. You can either enjoying a luxcury that you cannot afford with lower mileage car. The important thing is shop wisely, and not getting somone's bad car.

  6. When buying used it is about how the previous owner maintained it,  Ask for maintenance records and find one with the original owner that took care of the car properly.
