  1. Try searching HostelWorld.com... you might be able to find an apartment or a 6-person room for a reasonable price.  Keep in mind that in Rome, "reasonable" is a little different than in other cities... it's expensive, so you need to do some research to find a room you can afford.

Also, I have traveled extensively and my husband and I walk all over... and I would not say that there is a single location in Rome that is "within walking distance of all the tourist spots."  They are really spread out over a very large area.  I recommend learning the bus routes or buying passes to the double-decker red tourist buses which make loops through Rome and you can hop-on and hop-off at the different stops throughout the day.  Especially if you have small children, you don't want to tax them too much with walking miles and miles between locations.

Good luck, have fun, and remember--when all else fails, it's time for gelato!!! :)

  2. if it's your first time in Rome, I suggest you to book an hotel located in the areas of spanish steps or trevi fountain so that you do not get lost and visit more by walking understanding how the baroque district of Rome was built close to the Roman forum. if you want to know more tips about Rome you can visit http://www.romanguide.com

  3. Hotel rooms for 5 might be difficult to come by.  Check out some apartment rentals.  You can generally rent a flat for less than $1000 a week.  Another option is to go to a hostel.   You pay per person.  Most are child friendly, just do a little research.  As far as being in walking distance to all the tourist sites that's going to be nearly impossible, but don't worry Rome has a wonderful transit system that goes to all of them.  They also have the 110 trambus that stops at or near all of the major tourist sites.
