  1. Two main points.  One: The electoral roll is not free.  Two: The *ONLINE* electoral roll is by no means foolproof - not everyone is on it - far from it.

    Let me explain:

There was once a free electoral roll site.  It was called b4usearch.  They used a copy of the roll that was a few years old (something like 2002) but they ran foul of the data protection act when people started discovering that their personal details and address were available for free to every tom d**k and harry - the key being that many of these people had ticked the "opt out" box on their annual voter registration form that comes through the letterbox around every October.  This is because their are TWO editions of the electoral roll - one is sold to marketing companies and the like who use it for junk mail purposes and known as the "commercial roll" (this is the one that you can see and search online), while the proper "unabridged" roll is only available locally at your town hall / library with very firm restrictions on photocopying it or anything.  To tick the "opt out" box on your annual form means that you go the electoral roll equivalent of "ex-directory", and that even if you did buy some credits at 192.com, you are not guaranteed to get a search hit in the first place.  We opted out as a family a few years ago so won't appear in a search, and lots and lots of other people have opted out of the online roll too.  It really is not all its cracked up to be, though if you are serious about trying to find him then you'd have to purchase some credits and at least give it a go.  Failing that, the most realistic option is the salvation army.  They have a really good record in the field of finding and reuniting families.

  2. 192.com

  3. http://www.look4them.org.uk/salvation-ar...

  4. The Salvation Army will help you.  They help people to find lost ADULT members of their family.  http://www.look4them.org.uk/salvation-ar...

  5. You could try advertising on Friends Reunited which is now a totally free site.  There are several people with copies of the Electoral Roll who help with tracing on a voluntary basis.

You could try a letter to the local newspaper of the Town in which he lived.  Send it to "The Readers' Letters Column" and just say that you are trying to contact John Smith who lived at ! Smith Street in 2005.

You could try calling on the neighbours where he lived - I am still in contact with people who moved away from my road, a dozen years or more ago (Christmas/birthday cards, etc) so I have a forwarding address; a neighbour might send a letter for you.

You could try www.192.com - if he has moved from the Town in which he lived and you have no idea which part of the Country he is in now, where the box asks for "Location" put in "United Kingdom"

  6. It's the Electoral Register you need to check but you will need a town to work from.

    http://www.192.com/search/people.cfm

    Try this search.

  7. www.192.com or if he's on the 'phone, you could try to locate him on www.bt.com.

    good luck!

  8. My partner has the same problem. She never knew him. We have his Naval Records from 1910 until 1945, he then disappeared from the radar screen.
