Buca di Beppo (family style Italian) in either DC or Gaithersburg is a fun place that can accommodate a crowd.  The food's good, not to expensive, and it's a fun, laid back atmosphere.

If you are looking for excellent food and a really nice atmosphere, I would recommend La Ferme in Chevy Chase, MD.  Both my mother and mother-in-law really enjoy the food and country french atmosphere.  It's located on Brookville Rd. in a residential neighborhood and is very charming.  The desserts are especially lucious.   see: http://www.lafermerestaurant.com

Other recommends:

McCormick and Schmick in Bethesda has excellent seafood.

Clydes in Chevy Chase and the Tower Oaks, Rockville has good all around food and service.

Zaytinya in DC (Gallery Place) is very fun for tapas with a greek influence.
