Question:

I need to find a hobby that won't take up too much space

I am in the military deployed overseas and have found a bit of free time on my hands when I'm off duty. Back home when I had no obligations I would work on my truck or build computers. Unfortunately, I could not bring these things with me. I have made a short list of my likes and dislikes so hopefully someone can point out something that might spark my interest and won't take up too much space.

Likes:

mechanics

electronics

building things

the outdoors (when there's no gunfire)

Dislikes:

art

music

collections

reading (I see it as a means to an end, not entertainment)

The list is much shorter than I intended. I'll add more as it comes to me.

  1. when i was in the navy my addiction to miniatures blew way out of proportion. maybe get your hands on some sculpey, make little figurines, and sell them when you get home.i like sculpey.

you can incorporate electronic pieces into sculpey art too.

  2. I know you said you're not into art but have you considered photography?  You are in a position (geographically and historically) that most people will never see.

Because you are into electronics and building things, you probably have an eye for photographing architecture.  There are so many mechanical things where you are - photograph a part of a tank, plane, whatever that few people consider photographing.  Photograph objects and parts of objects that people often overlook.

Additionally, you seem to write well.  Have you considered blogging?

  3. Miniature models of ships and airplanes can be a lot of fun.  And you can give them away instead of collecting them.

I've had a lot of fun making art projects with electronics - flashing lights, ...  stuff like that.  But you said you aren't crazy about art.

Hmmm...  hobbies that don't take up a lot of room...  I keep coming back to model building.  Are you interested in rockets?  You can do a lot if you have space for a 2x4 piece of ceiling tile.
