  1. Because the field is competitive in terms of which students are selected, you need to be flexible in terms of where you will apply. It won't be easy but if you think outside the box and go to a school that may not be in a place you want to be in, you'll open up your choices considerably. You have to remember that you will spend 2 years at whichever school you wind up in...not a long time. Suck it up, get through it and you'll get your BSN and move wherever you want to after that.

That said, here's some examples of less competitive universities where the criteria for admission will be lower than some of the schools you may be looking at currently....remember, think long-term goal and not about the final 2 years of school..

Kent State University - regional campuses

    Ohio University - regional campuses

    Wright State University

    Youngstown State University

    University of Toledo

    Northern Kentucky University

    Arkansas State University

University of Arkansas at Little Rock

    Fairmont State University (WV)

    Glenville State University (WV)

    West Virginia Institute of Technology

In particular the West Virginia universities offer very reasonable out-of-state tuitions and a low cost of living to go along with it.

West Virginia Institute of Technology is a pretty good school, just outside of Charleston.

    Good luck!

  2. The admission criteria may be a minmum of 2.0, but there is probably no school that will currently accept a 2.3 GPA.  Competition for ALL nursing programs is exceptionally fierce, and basically all successful applicants have a GPA of 3.0 and mostly higher.  You might look for an AS program in your area that will accept you, and even that will be difficult, frankly.  I would also investigate other options in the healthcare field, such as some of the allied fields that only require an AS.  You would probably only need the specific academic and clinic coursework for that major.
