  1. Wait until you can devote at least $300-$400 to this task. The quality and inputs & outputs of the all in one out of the box systems is just awful. If you look around on sites such as amazon.com, Vans, and BPAV, you can search for speakers and receivers that will let you mix and match to your specifications.

On Amazon, you can find such speaker combos as: Polk Audio RM6750 5.1 Channel Home Theater Speaker System (Set of Six, Black) List price: $599.95 Sale price: $232.63. Add a Yamaha RX-V361BL 500 Watt 5.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver for $154.78 (List price $230), and you'll have a system thats not only far better sounding and far better quality than a cheap $150 out of the box set, but you'll have a lot more flexibility about what you can hook up to it.

  2. Though I can't steer you towards a system in that price range, I do want to warn you NOT to buy that Phillips. Just take a look at the specs. No inputs for your tv or 360, actually no inputs whatsoever... except maybe an Ipod (who cares). Sure, it'll play all those different formats (as long as they're on a dvd played on it's dvd player). But how are you going to connect it to your 360? or use it for watching tv?? You can't. Keep searching.

  3. Well the Philips HTS3264 5.1-Channel Home Theater System is only $159.99, it is a great system, it even has an ipod dock! That is really the best sound system for your price range.
