  1. It's difficult to gauge what is affordable for other families.  Especially without knowing the age of the home educated student, the educational philosophies of the family, and the amount of time the parents are wanting to devote to the endeavor.

Must the course be provided through an online "cyberschool"?

If so there is a great list of these online course providers (see link below) that your family can pick through to see if one would match your needs.

A school not listed in that collection of links is Oak Meadow.   It looks like a nice opportunity for those who want to homeschool but who need online courses & instructors.  The enrollment fees vary according to grade level and the amount of online support needed.  Find a link to Oak Meadow below.

If your parents have the time to put together a curriculum they may want to read the following books on the subject:

Homeschooling on a Shoestring - by Morgan & Allee

Homeschooling Year by Year: How to Design A Homeschool Curriculum  From Preschool through High School

       - by Rebecca Rupp

Finally a book I have found more than helpful (and in building our curriculum from it I have spent far less than the enrollment fees for online courses):

The Well Trained Mind  - by Jessie Wise & Susan Wise Bauer

Homeschooling does not have to be expensive or fancy, it simply depends on what the student needs and what the parents can provide.  One need not be wealthy to educate their child(ren) at home.

    Best of Luck!

  2. There are online charter schools all over depending on where you live. k12 is not the only one.

Perhaps this one would help you?

  3. Homeschool is supposed to be in your home - taught by a parent.

Public schools are affordable -- free.

  4. I am assuming that when you say you need an affordable homeschool you are talking about curriculum. Can you tell us the age of your little sister? Are your parents willing to commit the time to teach her or is your family looking to a tutoring option because a parent will not be available (more and more states are allowing this option under homeschool laws)? If so, is there anyone else in the family willing to supervise her instruction?

Most tutoring options are going to come with a significant pricetag. The going rate for private tutoring is $20/hr. The lure of that kind of pay brings in quality tutors as well as those who are totally unprepared and unskilled (notice I didn't say uncertified - a piece of paper doesn't mean as much as skill. LOL).

There are programs out there run by homeschoolers themselves that are working to provide no-cost to low-cost tutoring and courses online, but because everyone wants to be on the receiving end of such an idea and very few have the heart to be on the giving end they have to really set limits on enrolment to keep from burning out volunteers. I know, I am a volunteer teacher in one such program. Our classes are 100% free because our teachers volunteer their time, a homeschool mom in California pays for our web-based course management system, and four donors have gotten together to give us an online classroom where we can meet for live classes (audio, whiteboard, text chat, webcam, etc). We don't have enough volunteer teachers to have many openings though and classes have already been in operation for several weeks and are filled up for the semester or year depending on the course schedule. You may want to keep in touch with the site though and perhaps next year your little sister can get in if there are enough voluteers and classes to round out a grade level for her.

  5. I don't know your youngest sister's age; however, Time4Learning is a reasonably priced online home education program.  They have curriculum available for grades Pre-kindergarten through 8th grade.  The cost is about $20 a month--even less if the fee is paid quarterly/yearly.  The subjects available via this program are Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies.  The link is below:

    I hope this is helpful.
