I am looking to find out where my grandfather's details (census), he was Polish and came to England in WWII he wasn't Jewish as far as i am aware and was from Tarnopol which is now a part of the Ukraine. It would be really helpful if you could suggest anything. Have tried all sorts of things but had no joy. Thanks

  1. Since you gave no names or dates then the only site I can offer with free access is

    http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsear...

They are adding more records every day.

  2. There are many sites which you could look at to find out about your family in Tarnopol. At the time when your Grandfather was born Tarnopol was in Prussia. It was still under the Austro-Hungarian Empire then up until 1917.

There are many Prussian genealogy sites on the net if you put that into Google.

  3. You could look for Jewish society's...they might advise you as to where his records are likely to be...or visit a synagogue and ask for advice.

  4. A very large number of Polish people came to England during World War II and worked in vital War Industries like the air frame and engine factories.

They settled in Towns and Cities in Polish Communities, setting up their own Churches with Polish Priests and Polish Clubs; a matter of necessity since they lacked communication skills with the resident populations.  These communities also had their leaders and tended to have their own small grocery shops.

I'm afraid that you will have to wait a long time for Census info on your grandfather - there was no Census taken in 1941 for obvious reasons, so the first one on which he will appear is the 1951 Census which will not be released 'till 2051.

In some circumstances, you can apply for information to be released, just to you as his next of kin - it will cost you!

O.K. - you know where he came from and, I guess, where he settled and married.

Does the Polish population in that area have any information - the Church, Club, etc.?

Did he apply to become a Naturalised Citizen (if so, you can apply for his Naturalisation Papers - I have the papers for my husband's 3x Gt. uncle in which he declares himself to be "a Citizen of the Czar of Russia", details of his origins and family) and then more information via the I.G.I.

  5. WW11 records are not yet available, and the 1911 census's are not availale till 2012.
