  1. The only place you will find it for free, if there even was one for him, is at the local library of the community he lived in, as libraries keep old newspapers for people to view.  Otherwise, you will not get it for free.  AND, if  you don't know about what year, even the library cannot help you.

  2. *****First of all, you want the death date. Start with the Social Security records on line.  Put in his last name and it should give you a death date and place.  It's free at familysearch.com

That should be a good start!  Hope this helps!!

  3. Your grandfather was born on September 26, 1935 and died on Feb 22, 1971 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina of Hodgkins Disease, which he had for 16 months prior to his death.  He was 35 at the time of his death and died at  Charlotte Memorial Hospital.  He was normally a lab technician at a paper company and was the son of  John H Brown and  Eulalia Wilkie.  Ewen Funeral Service handled the arrangements and he was interred in Sunset Memory Gardens on Feb 24, 1971.  His spouses name was  Frances Pettit

This was all information that I gleaned from his death certificate, which is available on Ancestry.com  If you don't have it, I would be happy to send it to you, just send me a note through my profile.

As far as the obituary goes, you can order a copy from the library in the place where he died, normally for a nominal fee of a couple of bucks. Now that you have his death date, ordering it should be a snap.  Good luck in your search.
