I really can't find any truely free websites that you can actually view records without paying. I am particularly interested in my graetgrandfather's birth records (he's from Ireland) and the ship and date and things he came over here (about 1870)

  1. http://www.castlegarden.org/

    or

    http://www.ellisisland.org/

may help you find his immigration records.

GenUKI may have a birth record. It may not. You'll be seeing transcriptions there, not the record itself. They have a hard enough time getting volunteers to transcribe; no one wants to digitize whole records, and they would take up an unGodly amount of space.

There are 400,000 free sites. Many have advertising that tricks you into going to a pay site.

  2. I find these free sites very useful for the US:

    http://www.familysearch.org/

    http://www.rootsweb.com/

    http://usgenweb.org/

    http://www.cyndislist.com/

    And these for Ireland records:

    http://www.ireland.com/ancestor/surname/

    http://rmhh.co.uk/ireland.html

    Good Luck!

  3. Try Rootsweb or Cyndi's. Another good source is the social security death index if the person had a social security number. This lists when they died , where they lived etc. You can send for a copy of their original application which lists their parents names and birth. The links are listed below.

  4. http://www.castlegarden.org/

    or

    http://www.ellisisland.org/

There are alot more mate just keep on looking.
