Buy your tickets 30 - 60 days in advance if you can, also don't fly on Monday because that's when business people fly out from the weekend. And don't fly Fridays that's when they fly in for the weekend.  The prices really are higher on those days. I found that "Priceline.com" gets the best prices more than not for my family.  Also non-stop, direct flights are more expensive.

try to fly him out on a weekday like tuesday, wednesday, or thursday. then use priceline or one of those discount sites.

Go to www.compete4yourseat.com (sorry if link is incorrect), I've heard that they give you the exact same seat on the exact same plane for more than $50 less than Travelocity or Priceline.

go to a consolidator like kayak.com or airfarewatchdog.com and see what prices are out there.  Non-stops are usually more expensive. Have flexible dates - some days are less expensive than others. Try to avoid Monday mornings and sometimes Fridays.  Try to get your tickes as far in advance as possible. the closer you get to your flying date, the more expensive the ticket will be.
