  1. You will NOT be able to get a copy of your actual tax return within a week.  You have to file a form 4506-T which will likely have a typical turn-around time of 4-6 weeks. So you can forget about trying to obtain this from the IRS in time.  Your best bet is to try to obtain it from the company you used to file it.

Your other option is to request income information and an account transcript from the IRS via phone for the year you need.  Between these two reports you will have all of the information your financial aid office needs to process your application and they should be willing to accept it in lieu of a copy of your actual return.  If your financail aid director is being really dificult about it you can use the information contained in these documents to reconstruct your tax return to match the IRS records and submit that.  I am able to obtain these documents from the IRS within 48 hours for my clients, but that is only as a representative and through a special hotline only for tax practitioners.  The general public is supposed to file the form 4506-T mentioned above and wait for these documents by mail.  Still I would try to contact the IRS and ask that they fax you these documents.  If that doesn't work feel free to contact me and if you desire my office can make sure you have them in time.

  2. If you used a web site to file the return you should be able to log back on and download a copy. Otherwise, call the IRS and request a return transcript, but you may not get it in time. If you have a fax machine at home, they can fax it to you, though.

  3. Call or send in form 4506-T.

You probably won't have it by next week.
