They live under my shed and I've tried apples, carrots, and grass in a humane trap. They just refuse to walk into the cage. Anyone have any really good ideas, even those who think their ideas to be bad, on how to get these little twerps out of my back yard?

  2. We had a mama in our yard for a couple years. Her babies were too cute... but ate everything!

She went away when we blocked her way in; underneath fences. that helped. Now we have two small dogs and no ground hogs!

    Good luck!

Animal control will help you for a fee.

  3. Have words with Punxatawny Pete, and see if he can coax them out!  Or,.. freak them out with an alarm clock.

  5. Actually, the Fish and Game folks or the Animal Control folks should be able to help you with suggestions about baiting live-traps.  They're a good resource around here.

  6. Try fresh broccoli, put the trap out around your dinner time, near where they are living. They are easiest to catch that time of day. We had 13 woodchucks/groundhogs one summer, and they destroyed a 113 year old barn foundation before we caught them all. We live trapped them using the above process, and drove them into a totally rural swampy area where there were no houses, and let them go. At dinnertime, we would usually catch one a day within a few minutes, then drive to their new destination.

Raw, fresh broccoli works the best. Always wear heavy leather gloves and a coat when opening the trap too, you don't want to get bit or scratched. When you open it, put it down near a ditch, with the opening leading them into the ditch area. They will scamper away.

If all else fails, get a terrier dog. They will scare the c**p out of the little ground dwellers and keep them away. We had a beagle and lab who just liked watching them, but once we got a westie, he got rid of the last one on his first walk here, and we haven't seen any since. He has no hesitation to stick his head into their holes and dig just as furiously, and they just stay away with him here.

(Be ready, however, a terrior can be quite a handful when the varmints are gone! )
