This is a Baldor motor and it is 1hp. The motor will work fine if I can slow it down. How do I or what do I get to do this. I would like it so I can adjust the RPM's from high to low. I am making a merry go round for my kids

  1. you will need an invertor, you can set the torque with one so it will still run at low speed, it will also come with a potentiometer for adjusting the speed.

  2. The best thing you can do is to gear it down. The easiest way to do that is to put a small pully or sprocket on the motor and a large one on what your trying to turn.  The more difference you have here the slower it will go.  To go from 1760 to 300 you'll need about 2" dia on the motor side and about 12" on the other.

  3. For the price a "V" belt drive similar to what is used on a large drill press is the solution. For complete variable speed from 300  RPM to 1800 RPM a programmable electronic controller is the best option. The controllers are expensive compared to the "V" belt drive option but more precise.  The belt drive is a series of 3 different sized drive pulleys installed so a large sheave is driven by a small one for slower speed.  This would be my choice.

  4. You can use different size gears or a gear reduction motor that changes the speed "inside" the motor.
