  1. you arent going to get everythign here.  search for 'guinea pig care' on google and find some good websites.

  2. I've had my guinea pig for a couple of years. My sister's pig actually passed today, but that's another story. It's great you are getting a guinea pig. They are the sweetest things and are gentle if you treat them right. You need to be sure you have enough time to care for them. They need to be fed, played with, taken to the vet when sick, and need attention. They usually eat timothy hay and food pellets. I give my piggy the Kaytee brand of hay and food. They also like vegetable and fruits. A few carrots and leafy greens are great treats. Orange slices are a huge hit with my guinea pig. They give them a lot of vitamin C, which they need. Speaking of vitamin C, you can also put drops of Vitamin C in their water to keep them healthy. My pig also likes apple slices. Guinea pigs have different tastes, so it might take a few tries to find what your guinea pig has a taste for. Before trying any new fruit or veggie, check to make sure its safe. Some kinds of lettuce could make their tummies hurt. They also need little wood treats, you can find veggie and fruit shaped ones at the pet store. This keeps their teeth short, since their teeth never stop growing. Well, that's probably about all I can think of. If you have any questions, just email me. Have fun!!

  3. cavymadness.com has a lot of good info too.

  4. instantstar gave some good information, but I have to disagree with them on giving liquid vitamin c. It is not necessary if you feed your guinea pig a complete diet of guinea pig pellets (usually have vitamin c added), hay, and daily fresh veggies with the occasional fruit.

Excellent sites to hit for information:

  5. First off it is better to get 2 female guinea pigs then one.. because they are very social and can stress a lot when they are lonley. Also yes you are right the pet store cages are to small.. but dont get a rabbit cage because the bottom is wire and it will hurt the guinea pigs feet and give them sores.. instead you can make a guinea pig cage that is really easy all you need is on the site http://www.guineapigcages.com/

And for the food you have to give them unlimated timothy hay, a cup of pellets a day, and a cup of veggies a day. Sometimes you can serve them fruit as a treat. Some veggies you can feed them is, romaine lettuce, green leaf lettuce, carrots, parsley, corn husks. And some fruit you can feed them is grapes, strawberries, oranges, apples, watermelon. You should take them out everyday and put them in a playpen that is bigger then there cage to excersie. Don't put them in balls or wheels because they are very sensitive and it can hurt there backs. You should really adopt because pet store guinea pigs can some with deseases and stuff. Find a local shelter on this site... http://www.petfinder.com/

There is a lot to learn about guinea pigs so I suggest you research a lot before you get them. These are just some of the basic stuff you need to know. This is a great site to start on researching... http://www.guinealynx.info/

But please get 2 because they get really lonley

  6. Hi. I didn't know anything about my guinea pig when I got him. My friend just kind of said "here you go, i can't keep him. So you can have him." But I learned everything there was through the internet and now I have TWO healthy guinea pigs that are the greatest pets ever.

You can find all the info you need at www.guineapigcages.com. They have a forum and stuff. Then you can also google a website called GuineaLynx. That has a ton of info that'll be good for you.

    But the basics:

They need to be housed in a cubes and coroplast cage. You can make this and it only costs around 30 bucks max. Pet store cages are no good, too small. So please dont waste your money on one. You can build a HUGE cage for a fraction of the price of a pet store cage.

They need a constant supply of Timothy, Bluegrass or Orchard hay. Don't go by what the bag says by giving them a handfull. They need it round the clock.

Give them a guinea pig pellet with absolutely no seeds or any other little bits in it (bad for their digestion). They need pellets strictly made out of Timothy Hay. You can get Kaytee timothy complete or Oxbow Cavy Cuisine at PetSmart or a feed store. Make sure you get the one for guineas and not rabbits. They can't eat rabbit food.

They need a vitamin c supplement in liquid form. You can give it to them in a syringe. They need it every day because they don't make their own vitamin c and if they don't get it, they can die.

Give them a cup of leafy greens each day. Romaine lettuce with some carrots, and a small piece of fruit is best. Iceburg lettuce is not good as it gives them the runs.

They need to be with another guinea pig of the same gender, as they're social animals. If you only have one, it won't be very happy. Having two is the best way to go.

House them on nothing but Aspen wood chips or Anti-Pill fleece blankets. Stay away from cedar or pine bedding. The fumes will kill them and are bad for their respiratory system.

Those websites I listed earlier will really help you out with stuff like this so please check them out.

They oddly enough cost a lot of money so I hope you're prepared to shell it out.

  8. Well, I can't tell ya everything without it taking up the WHOLE page, but I'll give ya the basics.

    Cage-

Pet store cages aren't the best, they are way too small for ANY guinea pig.  Make a c&c cage(cubes and coroplast) they are the best cage and give your guinea pig TONS of space, depending on how big you make it.  For one guinea pig you should have at least a 2x3(in grids/cubes).  Here's a website that explains it-  www.guineapigcages.com/howto.htm

    One or two?-

Two would be best for this very reason.  Guinea pigs are social animals, getting two would let any pig feel happy and not lonely.  Just one would be okay, but you would have to interact with it more.  Also, if you can only get one, buy it toys or cozies so it will have something to snuggle with.

    Nutrition-

Timothy hay is very important to guinea pigs teeth, it helps them keep their teeth in shape.  Vitiman C is also VERY important to the diet.  Buy the best quality food you can afford.

    Bedding-

The best is Carefresh, NEVER USE CEDAR!!!  It's very bad for their respatory system!
