  1. The best and cheapest way to preserve a fence post is to use anti-freeze. Antifreeze kills everything it touches. It's an old boat-building trick used to keep wooden boats from rotting.

Soak the bottoms of the posts overnight in antifreeze and let them dry. The wood will soak up the antifreeze and prevent them from rotting. Be careful not to let any pets drink the antifreeze because it will kill them.

  2. If you want an inexpenive and long lasting way just treat the bottom of the post that are in the ground with roofing tar.  Paint the roofing tar on the post and allow to dry before installing.  Make sure you do the bottom really well to prevent wicking of water up the post, this is what causes rot.

  3. creosote cannon be used today.  there is a copper solution that you can use, but the best thing is to get either Cedar, Cypress, or treated pine, or at least ifyou want to split them yourself, get locust wood.  Those post will wear out a dozen post holes.
