they are mainly for rodents, small game, and fun.  ammo is very cheap and you can shoot for hours for very little money, which is what most people use them for.  

i'd go with the revolver.  the semi autos are ok, but in a very low caliber like this, or a very high caliber, i always go with revolvers.  much more fun to shoot.  save the semi for the 9mm, 40, or 45.

for a 22 revolver, i'd go with the ruger.  never have a problem.  but then again, you wont have problems with any revolver you choose.  semi's are hit and miss.

Not big enough. Go for a .45 or .38 Special.

They fire a lightweight, fast bullet that is quite suitable for hunting small game, or emergency self-defense if no other weapon is available.  Very low recoil and very cheap ammo make .22 pistols an ideal tool for training new shooters.

I disagree that Ruger .22s are "good" pistols.  They are passable, mostly because they have good accuracy and reliability.  However, everything I've heard about them suggests a very difficult procedure to field-strip them for cleaning.  They also have weird triggers and uncomfortable grips.  But to each his own.

Personally, I recommend the Browning Buckmark line of .22 pistols.  I have owned one, and they are very accurate guns with excellent triggers and they are simple to field-strip.
