I need to know about bicycle?

I want to buy a bicycle so I went into a store and it occurred to me that i don't know anything about what sort of bicycle i should buy. There were a bunch of bikes of different sizes and types and prices. I don't know which one i should buy. What is the difference between all these bikes? And how do i choose one?

The last time i had a bike was when i was 10. The main reason i want a bike now is for casual riding, probably transportation, and for fitness.

Also, is it a good idea to buy a used bike? Is it risky to buy a used bike? Will any old bike be good, am i taking this too seriously?

  1. Visit your local bike shop.  See what is available and what you like and the correct size frame for you.  Then decide if you want a new one or a used one.  At lest you will know what you are looking for.

  2. Well... you have many options, first off, don't buy a walmart or target bike, goto a bike shop or sporting goods store.  It sounds to me that you are looking at a lower end bike, the only options are 26" 21" 16" most people over 5'5" or even 5' will ride a 26" bike (large size)  after this you have more decisions, decide if you want a road bike, or a mountain bike (don't get a hybrid)  it sounds like you will prefer a mountain bike, this means that they are more comfortable and more useable, next if you want a hardtail or a full suspension, a hardtail is more efficient pedaling, but less comfortable, but also cheaper. A full suspension is more comfortable and more useable, but are higher priced and have less pedaling efficiency, once you pick, stand over the bike, if the top bar of the frame touches your crouch it is too big, but if it is to low to your crouch it will be hard to pedal, then adjust the seat to where you can sit on it and have your feet almost flat on the ground.

    good luck

  3. would suggest a fairly used mountain bike maybe off of eBay or sum thing. and yes, it taking this too seriously. if you buy a cheap used bike and something doesn't work or you don't like about it, take it to a bike shop. they can fix just about anything. hope this helps.

  4. Yes get a multi-speed bike; it is much better in a wider variety of terrain.

For situations like yours,  I like to advise using the Giant Suede 21 speed as 'your point of comparison'.

It is a slightly feet forward good value comfort bike.

It is very easy to find, almost every Giant dealer carries them.

It may not be the bike for you, but you can use it to say "faster" or "more comfy" or "more for off road".

That will make it easier to do comparisons and quickly find what you want.  REmember though, seats and tires are easy to change.

  5. If you get a used bike its simply like if you grabbed that money and threw it in the garbage.. My best suggestion is to get a bmx for casual riding and fitness. Transportation and fitness would be mountain bike.. If you are going to get a bmx i suggest a haro.. Mountain bike (well idk they are expensive if you want a good one) *REMEMBER IF YOU BUY A BIKE THAT IS BRANDED MONGOOSE ETC I GUARNTEE IN 1 WEEK YOU WILL BE SAYING BYE TO YOUR BREAKS* =D Get a haro.......
