  1. The trick is which 80GB are you talking about? Old (2007) 80GB, plays ~70% of PS2 games. It's available only in NTSC regions. Europe, Australia, India are in PAL region. The new 80GB (released world wide) doesn't play PS2 games at all, has only 2 USBs and no card reader. It's easy to tell the difference - new 80GB doesn't have a chrome trim.

  2. It depends on what source your looking at. In NTSC regions, yes, the PlayStation3 is backwards compatible with PlayStation2. Here in Australia, the PS3 80GB is not backwards compatible with PlayStation2. That's when I decided enough was enough of incompatibilty, lack of variety in games, and stupid pricing on the PlayStation3 so I got an XBOX 360 - best decision on consoles I ever made.

  3. the only Australian model ps3 that can play ps2 games is the 60gb.

  4. The US and Japanese 80GB models play PS2 games.

The Australian (and European) PS3 models all don't play PS2 games (with the exception of the first 60GB version, that isn't sold anymore).

Basically, you won't find any PS3 currently in stores that is able to play PS2 games.
