I need to know about the Carriers of Civilzation.?

I'm doing a project for my world history class and part of it is some vocabulary terms, one of which is "Carriers of Civilization". It's not anywhere in my textbook and I've tried searching it online. It brings up many different things and the only site that looked helpful wouldn't load on my computer. If anyone could link me to a website with some good information on this, it would be greatly appreciated.

The term Carriers of Civilization sounds like some generic term that insists someone or something is responsible for transcending knowledge throughout civilizations in history.  It could range from books to the Jewish people.
