I need to know for real....guinea pigs!?

I am thinking of getting 2 guinea pigs sometime in the future and i have to know from all of the guinea pig owners out there about them as pets. Ya see, about 2 years ago i bought gerbils, because i thought they would be good pets. People always said they were friendly and social, but they forgot to mention they HATE to be held, and would rather un around than be attached to their owner. I'm kinda bummed cuz that's not the kinda pet i wanted.

Anyways, people also keep telling me guinea pigs are friendly and sociable, but how do i know i'm not gonna get them and then they just run away from me all the time. Can they actually know who their owners are? I REALLY need to know, so tell me about that and your experiences with your guinea pigs. I just want to make sure I don't make the same mistake again. And yes, i am very responsible.

thanks in advance!

  1. Well gerbils are known to be visious, and as for guinea pigs they are really really good as long as you handle them. They live for about 6 years as well and are better in pairs, so it is good you are getting to. Oh yeah they give you wake up calls sometimes if they are hungry, only for the first few weeks until they get used to your feeding schedule.

Leah g is lying majorly. There are TONES of people I know with awesome and sweet guinea pigs, they only stink if you do not clean their cages!

  2. Guinea pigs vary in personality.  I've had cuddle pigs who love nothing more than to flop out on your lap and sit with you for hours.  I've also had pigs who just want to run around and play.  There's no guarantee.

My guinea pigs have all run away from me when I try to pick them up.  It's nothing personal, they're just prey animals.  Their first instinct is to run from anything strange.  However, they can be bribed with food.

Try reading over all the information on the guinealynx web site.  It will give you a good idea of guinea pig's behaviour, diet, housing and everything else.  I absolutely love mine, but my guys aren't really cuddlers.  They'll sit with me if I make them but aren't comfortable with it.

  3. I had a guinea pig and it was nice, but it did run away from me. It would not stay in one spot.

  4. Guinea pigs are awesome.  I have two.  I have a boy and a girl so I keep them in separate cages.  Get two girls because you can keep them together.  Two boys may fight.  They do not hate to be held.  I can hold mine for hours.  They love to be held.  They are skittish at first because it is their nature but once you earn their trust they will show you so much love.  They do run around the cage a little but that is normal.  They will know who you are.  Just don't leave them in the cage.  You need to interact with them daily.  It won't be a mistake.  You will love guinea pigs.  If you get them and have questions about their care you can email me.

  5. do not get a guinea pig they stink and a friendly one is very rare... look into a dumbo rat. they are smart and if you get it young and treat in well there is a 100 percent chance that it will love you and always want to be with you.... not to mention they never stink and are cute as h**l.... go look at them!!! i think you will like

  6. why you wan to play with guinea pigs?is a filthy animal

  7. I haven't had a guinea pig but I have friends who have had them.

If you're nice and gentle with them and as long as they're tame, they're REAL friendly. My friends' guinea pigs didn't even know me, but they let me pet them. They'll let you pet them for a really long time while they're eating grass or timothy hay.

By the way, it also depends on the guinea pig's personality. Make sure you pick one that's lively, alert, and CURIOUS. Curious guinea pigs tend to be the most sociable ones because they're not timid. :]

    Hope that helps!

  8. Guinea pigs are so adorable. Once they get to know their owner, they will always run to them for protection. They always squeak for attention the loudest to their owner. They are very loveable. Guinea pigs are afraid of sudden noises, and to be out of their cages. When they are out of their cage, keep them on the ground (they hate heights), and stay near them. My guinea pig is adorable... no matter where I put him, he will run to me and curl around me for cuddling and protection. In the morning after I open my bedroom door, I hear my guinea pig squeak for me. He actually can tell which door is mine! Guinea pigs never bite (unless you try to hurt/scare them!). I really do recommend getting a guinea pig, but just remember that it's in their nature to be a bit shy until they know you!

  9. Guinea pigs make excellent pets. I have had a few myself. They are sociable, but you should get 2. They get lonely sometimes if they don't have a friend. I would suggest that if you get guinea pigs that you hold them and meet them before you get them. Some piggies like to be held while others don't. They are very nice and rarely have I met a guinea pig that bites.

  10. well  they can be and tehy can't it all depends on you if u spend enough time with  it. for example u said you didnt like the gerbil or hamster because it didnt like to be held but my friend has one and it loves her. you just need to gain his trust first my dad had a guniea pig (it started off as mine) and it loved my dad and he would even hold him and as soon as my dad would come from work it would make a little sound for my dad to carry him and feed him

  11. Before considering a guinea pig, read up on them at sites like www.cavycages.com , www.guineapighome.com , and www.guinealynx.com

    good luck!
