my high school claimed they had been recycling our bottles for as long as i have been there (4 years). they stopped recycling our bottles about a year ago or less. apparently when they said they were recycling they had been throwing the bottles in the trash. i don't know how long they did this but teachers assured me that they did and sometimes even our paper went into the trash. all i know is that i had thought i was making a difference by recycling and its horrible to think that we have contributed so much to pollution w/o knowing it. it pains me to see students buy up to 3 bottles a day each and throw them in the trash. my school should take responsibility for deceiving us. they told us the recycling companies didn't send a truck anymore because our school had stopped it. the pricing apparently had been expensive and we couldn't afford it. i need to know if there are programs or something i could do to solve this problem.

  1. Recycling of glass bottles is a bit of a con.  The materials glass is made from (sand, soda) are cheap and widely available.  The problem is the amount of energy used to make them into glass.  When bottles are recycled they are not reused; they are broken up and remelted for use again so a similar amount of energy is needed.

In a way recycling  is used to make the glass bottle makers look as if they are doing something and it avoids pressure to actually reuse bottles.  In Germany and many other European countries bottles of drinks have a deposit on them so the empties are returned to the shops and then collected by the firm that cleans and reuses (not recycles) them.  This reuse of bottles makes a far greater contribution to lowering energy use than the so called recycling.

One sensible thing that you and your colleagues at school could do is to avoid buying drinks in cans or bottles.  Water is much better for you than coke!

  2. Recycling does not do anything but cause more pollution and inferior products. Being "green" is about feeling good, not doing anything worthwhile. I am related to a world renowned packaging engineer who has done numerous studies on recycling and never found any benefit. Except for aluminum cans because it is cheaper to recycle them than to make new ones out of bauxite. Study recycling from all angles, not just the easy ones, and you will find that it isn't worth your time, effort, or the damage you will do.

  3. Research your communities industries... Different companies use different plastics... Contact the companies to see if they have any programs to recycle plastic{Reprocessing} (that you have available)

They will be more receptive if they aren’t having to expend much effort, energy, cost, etc.

They get to say were environmentally responsible. And they get cheep filler for low end products.

The biggest concern they will have is cross contaminating plastic types... Perhaps a good use of DETENTION ???

  4. i think there is a program where u can do the recycling, i will do some more checking into it for u and let u know more soon as i do some more checking into it, i think here u can just ask people to recycle there containers and give them to you or something will be my best suggestion.

  5. Start your own recycling company and offer the school a no-cost deal. Or, ask your family to pay the bill. That way you can take the financial loss and feel good about yourself.
