I need to know how to scan a harddrive for viruses and spyware from another drive.?

I am trying to work on a friends computer who has went on some sites they shouldn't have and now they have some viruses and spyware on their machine. I have heard about installing the harddrive in another computer and running a scan from that computers harddrive. I know how to install the drive but not how to get the computer to run the scan from the main harddrive to the one I install. Please answer in detail. Thank you.

Depending on what anti-virus software you are using you should be able to do a custom scan and select the new HDD that has been added to your computer. Just make sure your not booting from the new HDD
