  1. Canada Post's Express Post is quite good, in my experience at least. UPS, however, is not, again from my own experience.

  2. Canada Post is excellent for shipping across Canada and their rates are reasonable. They have various rates based on how fast you want the package to arrive at its destination.

On the other hand, I find that UPS is better if you want to ship a package between Canada and USA. With Canada Post, they have an agreement to take American packages for US Postal Service, and Canadian parcels get delivered by US Postal Service down south. This handoff (at least in my past experiences on eBay) can incur a "handling fee" of anywhere from $5 to $50. Also, the packages tend to get stuck at the border as it gets through customs inspection.

UPS has its own customs brokers and operate on both sides of the border, allowing them to get the packages through quicker and with no hidden fees. The rate you pay for shipment is known up front and the person at the destination won't have to pay any surprise costs.

  3. Canada Post has good rates and if you get the expedited then it has built in tracking and insurance (up to $100). You can check out their rates via canadapost.ca

If you want the item there within 24 or 48 hours, then UPS is a better option, but you do pay for it.

Personally I've used Canada Post a LOT to ship out a number of things, including lighting fixtures, and the one time they damaged the package, it was no hassle at all to have it refunded to me. Their online tracking worked for me each time, and never had anything lost in transit. Of course, make sure you pack things well!
