  1. No not really, a lot of first timers go knowing nothing.

You learn from your friends and watching the sport.

A really good way to learn is to watch a pro game on TV the announcers will tell you waht is going on and the penalties are explained so you can hear what the hand signals the ref's are giving mean

  2. I used to report on High School football for my local newspaper, so I'll see if I can help!  The team with the ball is the offense.  The team trying to stop the offense from scoring is the defense.  The offensive team has 4 tries to move the ball 10 yards down the field closer to their goal.  Example if they run the ball 2 yards on the first try they still have 8 yards to go out of 10.  Since they are now on their 2nd try and have 8 yards it is called 2nd and 8. (meaning 2nd try, 8 yards to go).  If the quarterback (the offensive player who generally conrtols the ball) or any other player with the ball at the time, is pushed back farther by the defense, it is possible to be at say 2nd and 20 (meaning he got pushed back 10 yards, so then now have to make up that additional 10 yards, besides the 10 yards that they have to go in the next 3 plays.)  Lets say the offense is successful and they make their 10 yards.  Then it starts all over again with another 4 tries to move the ball 10 more yards. (This is called 1st and 10).  If the team gets the ball over the endzone, they score with a touchdown.  If they run or pass it over they get 6 points.  If they kick it over they get 3.  They will now try for a PAT (standing for Point after touchdown).  If they run or pass the ball into the endzone they get 2 points, and if they kick it between the uprights they get 1.  If the offensive quarterback passes the ball and a defensive player catches it, it is called an interception.  They can run with the ball towards their goal and score a touchdown also.  If the offense does not make their 10 yards, they will generally kick the ball to the defense who will hope to catch it, and try to run closer to their goal. (Once the former defensive players are in posession of the ball they will change with offensive players from their team and become the offense.  The same is true for the offensive players, they will trade places with the defensive players from their team.)

I know that this is a lot to digest for a beginner, but once you understand how the very basics work, you can start to learn other parts of the game by observation!  I hope that this helps you enjoy the game with your friends!
