I'm driving from california to oregon.. I live about 20 minutes from the coast and on mapquest it only tells me to take the 5 freeway there.

I was wondering if there was another route I could take where I could see some more of the coast and have a more pleasant view than a grey freeway.

Also, if you could.. please tell me some of the things I would see? thanks a ton

  1. You need to head for the 1, otherwise known as the 'Pacific Coast Highway' and take your time.  Stop off for a while in Santa Barbara and maybe check out some vineyards in the area north of there.  You will want to check out the San Simeon Hearst Castle since you drive right by it.  The highway north of San Francisco is one of the best scenic roads anywhere.

Takin the I-5 north would be a terrible choice in comparison.

  2. Wow! You're kidding right? This must be some kind of trick question.

You live in California, "20 minutes from the coast", but you don't know anything about your own State, and the Pacific Coast Highway? The PCH, Highway 1. Really??? That's unbelievable! There's a reason they call it that.

Of course Mapquest will give you the most direct route.

Sorry, but I'm just in a little shock at this question.
