I'm trying to search for a particular cat to adopt. I can't think of the name. It's rather popular and has been used in advertisement. They're extremely pretty, white, and very furry. I know that's not much to go on but if you can think of any breed that sounds remotely like that, please tell me.

  3. If you are considering adopting a Persian, keep in mind they require a LOT of upkeep. More than you would know.

Their fur is very cottony and requires daily brushing -- if you do not, your house will end up into a furball. Also, the cat will have massive hairball puking, and mats so tough to get out you might as well shave the thing. If you brush the cat daily, you will not have these problems and have a very beautiful cat. Bathing the cat weekly will also help the shedding but you still must brush it.

Also, they have a hard time eating certain foods because of the shape of their face.

Persians are very sweet cats, but are not playful. They would rather lie around and sleep. They tend to be prissy, even the male ones.

Persians are usually owned by people that can afford to have them groomed frequently, like people that show cats.

I would consider a different type of cat if you do not have the time for such a needy breed of feline. There are millions put down each year, very loving ones that are independent and don't need so much upkeep so please consider that.

  4. Yes if its the "cat thats gorgeous white with green eyes" For the Fancy Feast commercials, that is a smashed in face, look.... it is definitely a Persian. I had one, and he was extremely needey, like my chihuahuas.  Pretty and fury but Very needy.

  5. Sounds like you're describing a Chinchilla Persian like the one in the Fancy Feast ads?  Please fully research what it takes to care for a Persian.  A lot of people buy them impulsively without having a clue the care they require.

A Persian's coat needs to be fully combed - not brushed - at least every other day and daily during shedding season to prevent matting.  Brushes do little to remove the dead hairs of the undercoat and can break and rip out the top coat hairs. A good quality steel-toothed comb will remove the loose hairs of the undercoat and leave the topcoat hairs intact. .

Their eye area can get goopy and teary so you need to keep their eye area clear as well. http://www.eyeenvy.com is a really great product that I've used on my Persian for the past two years. His eyes are always clear and bright and he doesn't have any tear staining. http://www.ferretocious.com/percy/percyn...

The first sign of sniffles or sneezing you also can't ignore. Upper respiratory infections can be pretty hard on a Persian. Expect to go to your vet's at least once or twice a year for this and stave off full blown infections by using the vaporizer at the first sign of symptoms.

A Persian (then again, any cat) shouldn't be fed cheap corn-based grocery store cat food. The poor nutrition from these foods will reflect in the cat's coat. Persians also find it hard for them to pick up some shapes of kibble. A good food is Royan Canin Persian 30. It's not only especially shaped for them but it's got the right blend of nutrients as well as a hairball remedy. You also need to feed your cat a healthy canned food. Good brands include Merricks, Tiki Cat, Weruva and Innova Evo.

While Persians are very laid back cats and happy to just lounge about don't let that fool you - they also LOVE to play! Get some tinsel/feather wands and play with your cat daily. Not only is it great exercise for your cat but this sort of interaction will bond your cat to you.

Note that all the work and the expenses required to care for a Persian is the reason SO many end up at shelters. So please be sure you understand just how much work owning a Persian is so you don't end up dumping it at a shelter.  And on that note, check your local shelter as I'm sure there's probably as least two or three there right now waiting for homes.

Edit: as to the comment someone made that Persians aren't playful - that's absolutely wrong.  But then again, that person also said to brush them!  My Persian is incredibly playful as are any that I've met at shows.  Here's a few videos of my four year old Black and White Persian.  Sure looks playful to me!
