I just bought a 1998 Monterey 180M BR open bow bowrider powered by a 3.0L I/O Mercruiser. The boat is missing its prop and I do not know the first thing about choosing the proper one.

  1. Go to this site. They have a prop calculator that will figure out which prop you need for your boat.

  2. you take your boat and motor specifications to a boat dealer and his parts man, will ask about what you do with the boat, (fishing, Waterskiing etc) and along with the hp of the motor and type, the type of boat and size, and hull type, he will get the size of prop with the proper pitch for your boat.

  3. Look up your local Merc dealer.

If you are lucky they might even have a used one that they can save you a few bucks on.

Propellers always seemed overpriced to me.

They will be able to tell you exactly which propeller you need, and they can likely do it over the phone.

They will need the model number of the drive and likely the serial numbers of the motor. This should tell them what direction it rotates, how many splines it should have. and if you need a rubber kit for the hub. That information along with the boat should tell them the diameter and pitch too.

With those numbers you can search this page and it should tell you what was specified for your boat.

Here is an idea of what they will likely recommend.
