the song 99 red balloons by nina my stepfather said that there was a meaning to it but cant figure out what it is help please

  1. It was a Cold War-era protest song by Nena. The English version is slightly different, but still mean the same

It was a protest of war.  The song was written by  Carlo Karges and was inspired by the cold war tensions between the USA and the Soviet Union.  Generals start a war after seeing some objects in the sky - the red balloons - They thought they were being attacked.  However it was only the balloons.  Then there was nothing left.    The english translation wasn't as meaningful as the German it was written in.  Loosly translated to get the american market to like and buy the song.
