You should start with general info on the field. Look up websites for general q&a, information, etc. Try things like:

Next, borrow a few books from your local library (if they don't have them ask about an inter-library loan) or pick them up at a used bookstore or half.com.

Then go to college.

I learned a lot about electronics well before we had computers. I didn't get it all right. I studied science and electronic in H.S. I created a guitar pick-up that was like a transducer made from a record player needle cartridge and built a 110v converter power system using solar cells. Then I went to college and am relearning a lot of it and getting it right more often then not. Trial and error was where I started simply out of being interested.
